A mixed weekend for Wildcats
One win, one lost for the Swindon Wildcats
After three defeats on the bounce, Swindon's task didn't get any easier as they faced a weekend of a home double header. The Slough Jets were the first on the Cats fixtures, and with a must win game for Swindon the Cats took the game straight to Slough at the face off.
With Slough's defence looking a bit unsteady, Swindon looked to capitalize with the early goal. The Cats first goal came half way through the period, when Ciaron Long had a one on one with the keeper and slotted home to give the Cats the lead. Slough looked for an early reply but their forwards couldn't find anyway past Kudrna in the Swindon net.
John Wheaton doubled the Cats lead sending Swindon in to the period break with a much deserved 2-0 lead. The second period got under way, and it was stalemate until 3 minutes left of the period when Nicky Watt found the net with a slap shot just inside the blue line and giving the home side a convincing 3-0 lead at the break. The third period was played at a slower pace, and the only goal came six minutes from time when Nicky Chinn scored a consolation goal and the game ended 3-1 to Swindon.
Swindon Wildcats v Peterborough Phantoms
Swindon were looking to gain their second home win of the weekend against the Peterborough Phantoms on Sunday night.
It was just two minutes into the first period when Swindon goalie Kudrna tried to pass the puck but was intercepted by Peterborough which led to the Phantoms taking an early lead. The equaliser didn't come until 60 seconds into the second period when Josef Kohut netted to tie the score.
Swindon couldn't hold onto the tie for long and poor defending allowed Phantoms to once again take the lead less than a minute later. Swindon had no answer to this, and Peterborough showed strength and determination, which in turn paid off as they extended their lead to 3-1 with 13 minutes left of the second period! It looked like it was going to go downhill from there. That was until defenceman John Sitko took an attacking role and netted a goal to cut the deficit to 2-3.
It was the Phantoms who once again showed they were the stronger side and broke through the Cats defence to be faced with a one on one with Swindon Keeper Kudrna, but he managed to keep the Cats in the game with an awesome save. With only two minutes of the second period remaining Phantoms took a shot which took a lucky deflection over Kudrna into the back of the goal, giving the Phantoms a 4-2 lead going in to the final period. With all to play for in the third period, Swindon looked much more physical and determined. With both keepers being tested it was Swindon's Aaron Nell who managed to take on four defencemen before netting in the top corner to give Swindon hope bringing the score back to 3-4.
Swindon had much more possession in the last period and threw everything they had at Phantoms but were unable to beat Phantoms keeper, who was on top form. Match ended with Peterborough keeping hold of the 4-3 lead.
